Demand Response

Picture
What is Demand Response and why do we care about its success?

Demand Response is a program run by electric utilities across the country, to incentivize residential customers to shift their electric usage from peak periods of the day to off peak.

An $85 one-time incentive is available for each qualified thermostat enrolled in PSEGLI’s Smart Saver program.
Beginning in the second year of participation, when you participate in a minimum of 50% of all curtailment events/season, you will receive an additional $25/thermostat each year you participate.

Events are called by PSEGLI on hot summer days when the demand for electricity is very high. These events have typically occurred between 4pm and 8pm, in July and August, and range in duration from 2 to 4 hours. During 2022 there were a total of 2 events.
ENROLL
To be eligible to enroll, you must:
  • Be a PSEG Long Island residential customer
  • Have (or purchase) an approved internet-connected thermostat
  • Use that thermostat to control your central air conditioning
Cut cost, not comfort!
Your participation is risk-free. You can opt out of thermostat adjustment events at any time from your mobile device, web browser, or thermostat.

Why we care:
While Southampton town has seen a steady increase in year-round population, the data indicates that the demand for electricity has increased by > 15% since the pandemic arrived on the South Fork.
Picture
Each vertical line in represents 1 hour of electricity consumed by ratepayers located east of the canal and west of East Hampton over a twelve-month period. The regions inside the dashed lines are known as ‘load pockets’ because the grid’s distribution system is constrained as it crosses boundaries such as: at the canal and again at the east end of town.

Power Supply

Picture
To ensure consistent electric service availability, the utility must plan for enough power Supply to meet Demand. When demand exceeds supply, the result could mean a service interruption.  For example, the utility can increase supply or decrease demand to lower the risk of service interruptions.

Increasing the power supply can increase electric rates. However, with a Demand Response program, the utility can increase its ability to manage demand with our assistance.

Please enroll your wi-fi enabled smart thermostat in PSEGLI’s Smart Savers program so when there is a surge in demand the utility can call an event and decrease demand. They will pay you $85/per thermostat at enrollment and $25/per year starting the second year of participation.
