About Sustainable Southampton

Southampton Town seeks to become carbon neutral by 2040, through a combination of conservation, efficiency, and alternative energy sources. By Resolution 2017-475, the Town Board also established the goal to meet one hundred percent (100%) of electricity consumption needs through renewable energy sources by the year 2025.

The Town of Southampton is recognized by the NYS DEC as a Bronze, Climate Smart Community, and a Leader in the NYSERDA Clean Energy Community program, for the Town's efforts in decarbonization. These efforts include adopting the NYSERDA's NY-Stretch Energy Code, converting all Town street lights to LED.

Let's Talk Renewable Energy

Why renewable energy? Everyone has heard of climate change, but it’s not always easy to make the connection to our daily lives. Our energy choices are, however, linked to many of the most serious challenges that we face these days, and begs the question of what kind of future we leave our children.
Over 80% of the electricity is generated by burning fossil fuels which release greenhouse gases into our atmosphere. This has contributed to our environment’s degradation, increasing temperatures and local effects such as more frequent severe storms. Solar, wind, and hydropower are emissions-free sources of energy. New York State has an aggressive plan to switch over to these renewable energy sources and away from fossil fuels.

Implications for Southampton

The UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) recently released an updated report on the climate crisis. "Climate Change is not some esoteric concept happening in other parts of the world."

It’s having an impact in our backyards, on beach erosion, on pine beetle infestation, as well as on diminished shellfish population. Every increment of change matters.

The Oceans are being acidified by increased absorption of CO2 (carbon dioxide). Heat trapped in the atmosphere is warming, allowing the capture of more moisture. As a result, catastrophic weather events are more frequent and more severe.

Scientists say we can avoid the most drastic effects of irreversible climate change if we come together to cut emissions.

Transition to a Renewable Energy Future

In no sector of public policy is the statement, “think globally, act locally,“ more accurate than in the renewable energy sector. Southampton Town aims to lead by example. The CLCPA (Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act) was signed into law by Governor Cuomo in 2019. This NY State policy is aggressively working to increase adoption of clean energy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
By following orders issued by the Department of Public Service, utilizing programs funded by NYSERDA (New York State Energy Research Development Authority) and services funded by our local electric utility, the residents of Southampton Town can make demonstrable progress on the Town’s goal of achieving 100% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2025 by taking advantage of these local programs:

What You Can Do
The Next Step toward Net Zero CO₂ emissions

The evidence is explained in the IPCC1. Global surface temperature increases as a function of cumulative CO₂ emissions. By replacing those aspects of our everyday lives that burn fossil fuels with renewable alternatives, emissions are diminished. To encourage individuals, households, and small businesses to take action, program incentives from NYSERDA and Federal tax credits reduce costs of renewable alternatives. Eligible LMI (low middle income) households are further incentivized with free services and appliance replacement through these Sustainable Southampton Town programs:
